I got to work yesterday and i just had this feeling it was going to be one of those days.Firstly we have a young schoolgirl who comes to help after school.I tell her to peel some potatoes to go with the roast beef. She says we have none. So,we have to have macaroni cheese with the beef which did not sit well with the patients who wanted potatoes and gravy. Then one of the patients shouted me.She has a small fridge n her room and water was pouring out of it.I cleaned up the water and fixed it.She'd accidently raised the temperature higher on it.I walked out of her room and other patient called me.Can you fix my VCR it won't work. So,i fix that.
Then i think okay i can go and eat.I get my meal sit down and another patient knocks on the office door. She's upset and say's she wants to talk to me in private.Seem's she'd had a fight on the phone with her daughter. So i made her a cup of tea and chatted with her until she was feeling better.By this time my meal was cold and didnt look very appetizing so i threw it out.
At 7pm i was was just coming out of the bathroom after bathing a patient when i heard crying in one of the bedrooms.I went in and asked what was wrong. She said she'd lost her purse. Then she said she had $1000 in it from when she went out shopping with her daughter earlier.I searched her bedroom, the bathrooms ,the living room areas but no purse.I phoned her daughters cell phone to ask if she'd left her purse in the car.Im trying to keep the patient calm when really im thinking i hope they find it in the car otherwise im going to have to phone and report it as stolen.
Her daughter searches her car and says it's not there and she's sure she brought it home with her.The only places i haven't looked are the other patients bedrooms. So,i go and search those.I find it in one of their closets. The lady who had it has Alzeimers so she probably picked it up thinking it was hers.
I gave it back to the lady who lost it and apologised and phoned her daughter to tell her i'd found it.Then i asked for her permission to put the money in a sealed envelope in the drugs cupboard which is kept locked and the staff carry the only key on them.So thankfully it all had a happy ending but i was completely exhausted after.

I'm working afternoons again this week. When i got into work yesterday i found out that 3 guys had tried to break into the nursing home during the night. The woman on duty had phoned the cops and they'd caught and arrested them. They were apparently looking for drugs. All i could think of was thank god i wasn't on duty that night.I've been on duty before when i worked in Britain when a nursing home was broken into by drug addicts. It was very scary, even though the police arrived with dogs very quickly and we'd locked ourselves inside the office you still don't know what they're going to do.
I also spoke to moaning mary yesterday. She'd seen Doris's daughter at the mall over the weekend. She said the daughter was very off with her.Saying that Doris was now living with them and being looked after very well.Mary is a very loud nosey person and of course asked why she was living with them.Well it seems that they had threated to garnish their wages to pay for nursing home fees if they didn't want her.So they'd taken her back home and the daughter was now only working part time.

This week i'm working the afternoon shift at work.On monday i get to work and the boss is there packing up one of the patients rooms.I found this unusual since we never touch the patients things it's always done by the family. So,i asked what was going on.Now some of this is hearsay but i think there is a lot of truth in it.The patient in question i'll call Doris(not her real name).Doris has lived in the nursing home for a number of years and has many friends there. She does have some dementia but is always a happy lady.Doris's finances are taken care of by her daughter and son in law.She was a very careful lady who had a large home and sufficient means to end her days comfortably.
Now what happenened was that Doris's rent hadn't been paid for 5 months dispite numerous requests for payment off my boss.Between the rent and other personal bills Doris now owed $12,000.My boss eventually got a lawyer to sent her daughter a letter demanding payment. The daughter then writes a cheque which bounces. My boss loses patience and issues the family with an eviction notice.Which they choose to ignore. After discussions with social services my boss is told to drive Doris to the hospital and leave her there ,then refuse to take her back in the nursing home. So,now poor Doris is left homeless with no one wanting her at the hospital until social sevices find her a home.
Now the next part is hearsay which i heard off someone who knows Doris's family. They said the daughter and SIL have gambled all her money away on VLT machines. They took out a second morgage on Doris's house then sold it and they have now filed for bankruptcy since they'd lost their own house as well. They don't want to have Doris's with them because then one of them will have to give up work to take care of her.I feel so sad for poor Doris she must be so confused being taken away from her home and then no one wanting her.If you want to gamble away your own money thats your choice but you shouldn't do that to your mother. All Doris's belongings are packed in boxes in the garage at work.It upsets me everytime i look at them knowing she hasn't got all her little treasures around her.

Yesterday i spent most of the day booking my holiday online. So,im going away the first week of July.Firstly we're travelling to Drumheller to stay for a few days so we can go and visit the badlands. Then the remainder of the time we're going to spend in Banff in the Rockies.Ive booked hotels along the way.Which was not an easy feat to find affordable ones.
